Thinkific vs Teachable (2026): An Honest Comparison From Someone Who's Built on Both
Thinkific and Teachable look almost identical on the surface. Here's what only shows up after you've signed up: fees, checkout control, and design limits.

Pricing checked: October 2026
These two get compared constantly because they look nearly identical from the outside. Course player, quizzes, a checkout page, a dashboard. The differences that matter don't show up on the pricing page. They show up after you've already built your course and tried to do something the platform didn't expect.
Quick verdict: Thinkific if you want more design control over your course site and you're fine paying a bit more up front. Teachable if you want the fastest possible setup and you're starting on a lower-cost plan where the transaction fee matters more than the subscription price.
Pricing and fees
Thinkific: Basic $54/month ($40 annually), Start $109/month ($82 annually), Grow $219/month ($164 annually), plus a custom Plus tier. No permanent free plan. Platform transaction fee is 0% through Thinkific's own payment processor; using your own Stripe adds a surcharge that scales down by tier, roughly 5% on Basic down to 1% on Grow.
Teachable: Starter $39/month ($29 annually), Builder $89/month ($69 annually), Growth $189/month ($139 annually), plus a custom tier. The Starter plan carries a 7.5% transaction fee on every sale. Builder, Growth, and the custom tier drop that to 0%. Standard card processing (around 2.9% + $0.30) applies on every tier regardless.
That 7.5% fee is the detail that changes the real comparison. A coach doing $3,000/month in sales on Teachable's Starter plan pays roughly $225 in transaction fees on top of the $29 to $39 subscription, more than the cost of starting on Builder instead. Teachable's pricing page makes Starter look like the budget option. For anyone with consistent sales, it usually isn't.
| Thinkific Basic | Teachable Starter | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly (annual) | $40 | $29 |
| Platform transaction fee | 0% (own processor) | 7.5% |
| True cost at $3,000/mo sales | $40 | ~$254 |
Course builder and quizzes/certificates
Both handle the basics: video lessons, quizzes, downloadable certificates. Thinkific's builder feels slightly more flexible for structuring a multi-module program with prerequisites and drip content on its mid tiers. Teachable's builder is simpler and faster to get a straightforward course live, which is the tradeoff for feeling a bit more rigid once you want something more structured.
Site design flexibility
Thinkific gives more control over how your course site looks, custom themes, more layout options, enough that a course site can read as fully on-brand without a developer. Teachable's design options are more templated. Functional, clean, but visibly a Teachable site unless you're comfortable digging into custom code injection.
Checkout, upsells and payment processing
This is the category where "almost identical" stops being true. Teachable's checkout supports one-click upsells and order bumps more natively, useful if your offer structure includes a tripwire or an immediate upgrade at purchase. Thinkific's checkout is solid but the upsell flow takes more manual setup to match what Teachable does by default.
Payout timing differs too. Both process through Stripe or PayPal under the hood, but Teachable's native payment gateway options have historically had more reported friction around payout holds for new accounts than Thinkific's. Worth asking directly about current payout timing before committing if cash flow timing matters to your business.
Student experience on mobile
Both have mobile apps or mobile-responsive course players. Thinkific's mobile experience has generally been reported as smoother for scrolling through longer lesson lists. Teachable's is functional but shows its age on mobile browsers in particular, less so in its dedicated app.
Support and platform stability
Thinkific's support is solid across live chat and email, with phone support unlocked on the Grow tier. Teachable's support has gotten thinner since its 2023 acquisition by Hotmart, with clients reporting slower response times on billing and account issues specifically. If responsive support matters to you, especially during a launch week, weigh this alongside the fee structure.
What I'd pick for you
Starting from zero, testing your first course, tight budget. Thinkific Basic. The 0% transaction fee on their own processor beats Teachable's 7.5% Starter fee the moment you have any real sales volume.
Want the fastest possible setup, plan to upgrade past Starter immediately. Teachable Builder. Skip Starter entirely given the fee structure, and Teachable's setup speed is a real advantage if time-to-launch matters most.
Design control matters, want the course site to feel fully custom. Thinkific, any tier that fits your budget.
Your offer leans on checkout upsells and order bumps as a core part of the funnel. Teachable Builder or Growth, where its native upsell flow saves setup time.
